Apart from normal business communications by telephone, fax, telex and E-mail, WACO has invested in its own communications network, "WACO Information network and Global System" or WINGS. This is a state-of-the-art network for Electronic Data interchange (EDI) and is based on open communication standards. All shipment and status information is extracted from the in-house computer systems of the WACO members and converted into standard EDI messages automatically. The communication system is based on the worldwide acceptes x.400 communication standard. This way of communicating provides maximum reliability, security and end-to-end tracking of message delivery. The network that connects all WACO members on a global scale is provide by SITA, the network of airlines. SITA employs staellite supported information services with technical back-up in all countries around the world. It is extremely reliable and assures the transmission of accurate data at all times. To support the system, WACO provides a helpdesk service.

The formats of the EDI messages are based on standard messages specially designed for airfreight forwarding, such as the sending and receiving of air waybill information and proof of delivery messages. The use of standardized communication and EDI techniques makes the system easily accessible for all WACO members. Alternatively the WACO members can use the same infrastructure with the airlines and clients.

WINGS EDI is highly versatile and is operated automatically by the in-house systems. For the remote offices without a central in-house computer system, WACO has developed s standalone WINGS EDI Workstation. The Workstation can be operated frm PC's or laptop computers and uses a standard modem to connect to the WINGS EDI network. new elements of technology and modifications are constantly applied to improve the sytem.
The WINGS EDI system confirms WACO's position in the top level of modem communication orientated international forwarding organizations.
